Ruth Travis, known as the "Rug Lady", holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Textiles from the University of Tennessee. She is an internationally known author and trainer and began her career in the fiber care industry in 1985 working as the Manager of a Fiberseal office in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Three years later in 1988, she and her partner, Ginger founded a diversified carpet and fabric cleaning business, Interior Care, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. There she performed carpet and rug cleaning, upholstery cleaning, fiber and fabric protection, carpet inspection and color correction services for interior designers, carpet mills and a variety of other clients. She began selling rugs in 1995 with the founding of her rug sales outlet, the Rug Exchange.
After selling her share of the cleaning business to her partner in 2001, Ruth shifted her focus to training and instructing others in the fiber care industry. She has traveled throughout the U.S. and abroad teaching and sharing her knowledge with cleaners, inspectors, retailers, designers and restorers.
Over the years, Ruth has written dozens of articles for industry trade magazines, many which you will find under the articles section of this site. She has served as President of the Society of Cleaning and Restoration Technicians for several terms. She has served as President, Vice President and Marketing Chair of the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification. She currently is an IICRC-approved instructor for Color Repair Technician and Rug Cleaning Technician Certification Categories. She has participated in writing the IICRC S300 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Upholstery Cleaning for the industry in 2000, and in the revisions of IICRC S100 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Carpet Cleaning in 2002 and 2011. She holds the IICRC-Master Textile Cleaner designation. She is a Master Rug Cleaner and a Certified Rug Specialist through the Association of Rug Care Specialists.
After fulfilling her responsibilities as President of the IICRC from 2006 to 2008, Ruth was named the Director of the WoolSafe Organization in North America. In 2010, she became a consultant with ProCare in Nashville, Tennessee overseeing their new rug cleaning operation. From June 2011 to September of 2017 she worked with Chase Carpet and Rug Care in a similar capacity.
Ruth has over 30 years experience in the fine fiber care industry and hopes to use this site to share that knowledge with consumers, designers, carpet and rug retailers, and cleaning professionals.
